Custom Vintage Marshall Wells Hardware Co. Hand Made Embossed Double Bit Axe
This auction is for a rare, vintage, Marshall Wells Hardware Company ‘Hand Made’ embossed axe, customized and restored by Stunner Blades Customs, San Francisco, California.
Somewhere between 1916-1917, the Marshall Wells Hardware Company dropped ‘Hardware’ from their name, due to them selling additional items besides tools. This historical information makes this beautiful embossed double bit axe head over 100 years old!
Upon receiving it, it was thoroughly cleaned and inspected for damage. After removing any rust and foreign matter from the head, it was hand polished and blued.
The haft chosen for this vintage head was figured American Hickory. It was hand sanded smooth and made for a tight and secure fit to the eye. A birch wedge coated with boiled linseed oil and Titebond Ultimate was driven into the kerf. A stainless steel ‘Taco’ brand conical wedge was driven in perfectly center and hand sanded flush.
The entire axe head and haft were coated and polished with genuine Odie’s Oil for protection and to provide a beautiful sheen.
Overall length from top of eye to bottom of haft is 34 1/4 inches. The double bit head measures 9 inches from mid bit to bit with 4 1/4 inch blades. Overall weight is 4 lbs 10.3 oz.
